April 2007: The State of Baseball Betting

We are at the end of April, and the 2007 MLB season is in full swing. As of this writing, there have been 330 MLB games played. We’re starting to see some interesting baseball betting trends.

It’s important that I give credit to my source, which is SportsBettingBaseball.com. By reading the MLB reports there, which are published throughout the week, it’s easy to spot some of the baseball betting items I’ll mention.

According to the MLB Totals Report, there are a few juicy teams to bet on. For instance, the Oakland A’s have played 21 games and 17 of those have gone under the total.

On the other end of the spectrum is the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. They’ve played 21 games and 16 of those have gone over the total.

Those two teams are the most pronounced differentials so far. Another good team to bet the over on is the New York Yankees. They’ve gone over the total in 13 of 18 games.

So far this season, one thing is very clear. Betting on the underdogs at home, yes at home, can get you killed. There have been 100 games where the home team was the dog and if you bet them all, you’d be down almost 28 units. However, had you bet all 230 games where the road team was the dog, you’d only be down about 6 units.

Dogs look to be shining when they are +$2.00 or more. There have been 12 such games, and the running tally is +7.64 units.

Where betting on favorites is a wash is in the -$1.50 to -$1.99 range. There have been 61 games like this so far and the running tally is -11.39 units. Look for favorites at -$1.49 or below.

So, what’s the best MLB team to bet on game after game? The Cleveland Indians. If you’ve been betting the Indians each game, you’re up almost 8 units.

And the worst? The New York Yankees. You’d be down almost 11 units. The biggest surprise for me is the Pittsburgh Pirates. They’re listed 4th in the latest MLB Money Rankings report from Sports Betting Baseball.
