Strikeout Leaders

With spring training nearing an end, I thought it was a good point to look at pitchers to see who is dominating so far. Leading the strikeout list is the usual suspect, Randy Johnson of the New York Yankees. He’s also pitched 24.1 innings this spring training, which is the most of any pitcher. As we look at the top 15 strikeout leaders so far, let’s also look at innings pitched and see who is a real fire baller this spring training.

First, the list of the top 15 pitchers, strikeout wise:

1. Johnson, Randy NYY 24
2. Myers, Brett Phi 23
3. Sabathia, C.C. Cle 21
4. Harden, Rich Oak 19
5. Santana, Ervin LAA 19
6. Carpenter, Chris StL 18
7. Zito, Barry Oak 18
8. Watkins, Steve Was 18
9. Lowe, Derek LAD 17
10. Bedard, Erik Bal 17
11. Hernandez, Felix Sea 17
12. Devine, Joey Atl 17
13. Smoltz, John Atl 16
14. Hudson, Tim Atl 16
15. Towers, Josh Tor 16

Aside from Randy Johnson, most of these pitchers are averaging just over 1 strikeout per inning. For example, Brett Myers (PHI) is averaging 1.35 strikeouts per inning. John Smoltz (ATL) is averaging just under 1 strikeout per inning.
