New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles

The New York Yankees are at Baltimore for game two of their series today. Yesterday, the Yankees won 6-5 in dramatic fashion. Farnsworth for the Yankees got the win and Ray for the Orioles got the loss. Today’s match up puts the struggling Randy Johnson of the Yankees against even higher ERA Adam Loewen for the Orioles.

First, let’s look at both teams. The Yankees have been on fire of late. They have won 8 of their last 10 games, including 3 of 4 from the Central Division leading Detroit Tigers. Meanwhile, the Orioles are simply treading water. They are 5-5 over their last ten and losers of two straight. Over the last ten games, the Yankees are scoring an average of 7.5 runs per game. In their previous series with the Orioles, the Yankees took 2 out of 3 and scored 6 runs per game on average. Last night they scored exactly 6.

The Orioles are scoring an average of 5.4 runs per game over their last 10. In their previous series with the Yankees, they scored an average of 2.66 runs per game and took 1 out of three games. One of those games was against Randy Johnson. In that game, they scored 1 run. If you are into betting on teams and streaks, the Yankees are the play here. They are a -174 favorite, which is about right given the statistics of the game.

Randy Johnson is coming off a stellar performance against the Detroit Tigers where he allowed only 2 hits over 6 innings. This will be the first start for Orioles’ pitcher Adam Loewen. A week ago he pitched 4 innings in relief to the Angels and gave up 4 runs. If Johnson is in form, the Yankees should have an easy time—but the game is not played on paper.
